Join MAISRC researchers and visit one of our hybrid cattail research sites at Coon Lake in Anoka County! Hybrid cattail is a highly invasive plant that can have major ecosystem impacts to lake communities and can be difficult to control. This research is looking at hybrid cattail removal as a tool to restore nearshore native plant communities and fish habitat in cattail dominated sites. Learn about this project and see research in action! Date: Wednesday, August 27th Time: 11am - 1pm Where: Coon Lake County Park: 5450 197th Ave NE, Columbus, MN What to bring: A life jacket and weather-appropriate clothing Event is free, register to get lunch: z.umn.edu/coonlakecattails Participants will meet at the Coon Lake County Park pavillion and join researchers Amy Schrank and Claire Rude to hear about the research methods, impacts of hybrid cattail, and how small scale removal projects like this could support lake restoration goals and maintenance of important nearshore fish habitat. MAISRC will have one pontoon on site for transporting participants and we are working with local partners to provide additional boat transportation to the site, however, space may be limited. Participants are encouraged to bring their own boat, kayak, or canoe (and ensure that it is cleaned, drained, and dry before entering the lake) to make the short trip to the study site.
